2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (CAS 94-96-2) is non-irritating to skin but may irritate the eyes. It works as an effective repellent against chiggers, mosquitoes and black flies. Its efficacy can be improved when blended with dimethyl phthalate and indalone, and the mixture applied on clothing also repels ticks and flies.


The product, 2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (EHD, CAS#94-96-2), has diverse uses, including:

Used as a boron extractant;

Applied as a reactive solvent for non-hydrolytic sol-gel synthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles;

Applied as raw material to selectively prepare 2-ethyl-1-hydroxy-3-hexanone via hydrogen peroxide oxidation.
