Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) is a nonionic surfactant with the formula C₁₅H₂₄O(C₂H₄O)ₙ. Synthesized from nonylphenol and ethylene oxide, it is a pale yellow to brown viscous liquid with a characteristic odor. Boasting excellent detergency, wetting and emulsifying performance, it is widely used in detergents, pesticides, coatings, textiles and cosmetics. Restricted by regulations for its poor biodegradability and aquatic toxicity.
