Product Description

Products Description of Silicon carbide CAS# 409-21-2

Silicon carbide, a hard covalent material, is made by carbothermal reduction of silica at >2200 °C in electric furnaces. It features outstanding abrasion, corrosion and thermal shock resistance, with moderate electrical conductivity and oxidation susceptibility. It exists in hundreds of polytypes, mainly cubic β-SiC and hexagonal/rhombohedral α-SiC.

Product Application of Silicon carbide CAS# 409-21-2

Silicon carbide, a rare fully synthetic refractory mineral, has four main bonding systems: oxide, Si₂ON₂, Si₃N₄ and self-bonded. The first three are permeable and prone to bond-phase corrosion, while self-bonded SiC is impermeable with only surface corrosion. Produced by reaction bonding or sintering, self-bonded variants have similar chemical resistance but distinct physical properties.
