SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate / sodium lauryl sulfate, K12) is an anionic sulfate surfactant in white to pale yellow powder form. It is water‑soluble, non‑toxic, compatible with anionic and nonionic substances, and features strong emulsification, foaming, detergency and biodegradability. Its aqueous solubility is inferior to AES.

With powerful cleaning, emulsifying and foaming properties, sodium dodecyl sulfate is broadly used in daily chemicals, textiles, fire protection, emulsion polymerization, pharmaceuticals and mineral flotation. Under GB 2760-96, it is permitted as a food processing aid for foaming and emulsification in baked goods, beverages, protein products, fruits, juice and edible oils.
