Aluminum potassium sulfate dodecahydrate is an industrial-grade product with a purity of ≥99.5%. It occurs as colorless crystals or white odorless powder. It has a melting point of 92.5 °C and decomposes when heated to boiling. Its vapor pressure is negligible at 25 °C, with a relative density of 1.757 at 20 °C. It is freely soluble in water, yet insoluble in ethanol. The product remains stable under conventional conditions, but is incompatible with strong bases and should be stored separately from them.

Aluminum potassium sulfate dodecahydrate is a white, water-soluble crystal. It is prepared by roasting alunite in a furnace followed by crystallization purification. In traditional photography, it is used to harden gelatin emulsions. It can be applied by adding into the emulsion, bathing exposed photographic plates prior to development, or incorporating into the fixing bath. Furthermore, when compounded with citric acid or other acids, it can be formulated as a clearing bath to remove developer stains from photographic negatives.
