Colorless monoclinic crystals or white crystalline powder, odorless with a slight salty taste. Relative density 1.667. Freely soluble in water, solubility about 231 g/100 mL at 100 ℃, insoluble in alcohol. Highly hygroscopic, with strong reducing properties and decomposes in acidic solutions.

Sodium thiosulfate (CAS 7772-98-7) features reducing, complexing and detoxifying properties with extensive applications. Medically, it is used for emergency treatment of cyanide and heavy metal poisoning, and for topical dermatological use. Industrially, it serves for water treatment to remove residual chlorine and hexavalent chromium, dechlorination in textile printing and dyeing, and hypochlorite decomposition in papermaking and pulping.
