Product Description

Product Description of Europium Oxide CAS#1308-96-9

Europium oxide appears as white to pale pink powder, whose color varies with production processes. It is hygroscopic and exists in two crystal forms, pseudo-trigonal and equiaxed, depending on calcination temperature. The equiaxed phase possesses the same crystal structure as scandium oxide. It features a relative density of 7.42 and a melting point of 2330 °C. Insoluble in water, it dissolves in inorganic acids to generate trivalent europium salts, and is also soluble in formic acid and acetic acid. Moreover, it can absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide and convert into europium carbonate.

Product Application of Europium Oxide CAS#1308-96-9

Europium oxide (Eu₂O₃) is commonly used as an additive for infrared-sensitive phosphors to enhance red luminescence in TV and computer display picture tubes. It is also added to fluorescent lamps to boost luminous efficiency and used in laser-related materials. Thanks to its strong neutron-absorbing property, it is further applied in control rods for nuclear reactors.
