It has melting points of 43 °C (cis) and 70 °C (trans), with a sublimation temperature of 160 °C. The compound is miscible with water and alcohol, soluble in ketones, and nearly insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons and ethers.

1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol is an important precursor for polyester production. It serves as a key comonomer in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE). In addition, it is used in the synthesis of polyketal copolymers and as a diol comonomer in the preparation of polyester-carbonates, such as those based on 1,3-propylene-co-1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene succinate.
