Puerarin, also referred to as pueraria flavonoids, is a flavonoid glycoside extracted from the roots of Pueraria alba or Pueraria thomsonii and is one of the principal active constituents of Pueraria lobata.

Pueraria is highly valued for both its nutritional and medicinal properties and is traditionally known as the “South Ginseng” of China. In recent years, puerarin has attracted widespread attention in China due to its applications in both food and medicinal products.

Puerarin is a natural isoflavone isolated from plants of the genus Pueraria and is commonly used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. It is biotransformed by intestinal bacteria into the phytoestrogens daidzein and equol, thereby producing antithrombotic, antiallergic, and other beneficial effects.

When administered intraperitoneally, puerarin induces various biological responses by modulating serotonin receptors. In addition, at concentrations of 20–40 μM, it inhibits lipopolysaccharide-induced activation of NF-κB in RAW 264.6 macrophages.
