Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic. Natural form is active L-isomer, while synthetic one is racemic mixture.

It is bitter crystalline solid with specific solubility properties, stable in neutral and weak acid yet easily inactivated in alkali. Inactive D-isomer cuts synthetic product’s antibacterial potency by half.

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, previously first-line for typhoid fever and effective against anaerobic infections and susceptible bacterial diseases.
Its clinical application declines due to severe side effects. It works against salmonella, dysentery bacillus and other pathogens, and is widely used as antibacterial pharmaceutical raw material.
