Carbamazepine is a white or pale crystalline dibenzazepine antiepileptic agent. It works similarly to phenytoin sodium and is highly effective against psychomotor, generalized and partial seizures.

It shows superior effects on peripheral neuropathy, and is commonly used to relieve trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is also applicable for arrhythmia and diabetes insipidus with wide clinical uses.

Carbamazepine is a dibenzazepine antiepileptic with effects similar to phenytoin sodium. It mainly treats psychomotor, generalized and partial seizures, and works better than phenytoin sodium for peripheral neuropathy, trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is also used for arrhythmia and diabetes insipidus.
Its oral LD50 is 3750 mg/kg in mice and 4025 mg/kg in rats. Pharmacologically, it acts as a sodium channel inhibitor and binds to GABAA receptor benzodiazepine sites for medical and research use.
