Cimetidine is an H2 receptor antagonist that suppresses gastric acid secretion and lowers gastric acidity. It protects against chemically induced gastritis and relieves stress gastric ulcers and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
It possesses anti-androgenic properties for hirsutism treatment, and can modulate immunity to restrain tumor metastasis. Clinically, it is commonly used for gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as upper digestive tract bleeding.

Launched in 1975, cimetidine is the first selective H2 receptor antagonist for peptic ulcer therapy. It potently inhibits basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion to relieve acid-related gastrointestinal diseases.
It protects against chemical gastritis and treats stress ulcers and upper gastrointestinal bleeding, widely applied for gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, esophagitis and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.
It also acts as an I1 imidazoline receptor agonist, and can suppress tumor cell adhesion and metastasis by reducing endothelial selectin expression.
