Product Description

Melamine CAS#108-78-1

Melamine is a trimer of cyanamide featuring a 1,3,5-triazine ring structure. It functions as a xenobiotic metabolite and is chemically related to cyanamide, serving as the conjugate base of melamine(1+).

Melamine (C₃N₆H₆) is a white crystalline compound with a cyclic six-membered ring composed of alternating carbon and nitrogen atoms, bearing three amino (NH₂) groups. It can be copolymerized with methanal to produce thermosetting melamine resins, which are widely used in laminated coatings.

Product Usage

Melamine is widely used in the production of high-pressure laminating resins, such as decorative countertops, molded compounds like dinnerware, and surface coating resins for appliances and automotive topcoats. It is also utilized in textile and paper treatment resins. Other applications include adhesive resins for bonding lumber, plywood, and flooring, as well as resins used in leather tanning. Melamine, melamine cyanurate, other melamine salts, and guanidine compounds are among the most commonly used nitrogen-containing flame retardants. Specifically, melamine serves as a flame retardant additive for polypropylene and polyethylene, while melamine cyanurate is commercially applied as a flame retardant for polyamides and terephthalates.
